Charity and Fundraising Activities

The Rotary Club of Teesside West raises money for charities by organising events such as Race Nights, Casino Nights, golf days etc and by collections from the public.
This year the Presidents Charity is the North of England Children’s Cancer Research.
A donation of £420 was made to an Aids clinic in
Ghana and money has been raised to send an “Aqua Filter” to this clinic. This filter is a devise for treating brackish water into potable water in areas with no available electrical supply. Details of the Aqua filter can be found on the link  www.rotary-aquafilter.org.uk.

The club is continuing its active participation in the development of “Daisy Chain” a centre for autistic children.  Young people will be sponsored on the James Cook Sailing Experience and RYLA (Rotary Youth Leader Award).

Annually the club helps to organise a “Disabled Sports Day” which is a fun day enabling disabled people from the North East to compete in various sporting activities.

This year is the Centenary of Rotary and a number of events are being organised during the summer of 2005 and the principal beneficiary will be the Air Ambulance service.

Donations from the club to Foundation the main Rotary Charity this year will total £1000.  The club is an active participant in the Rotary “Shoe Box” scheme in which schools and other organisations are encouraged to fill a shoe box with necessities such as soap, string etc. to be sent to areas affected by disasters.

The reaction of the club to the tragic events caused by the tsunami was to raise £3000 from the public and club members and send this to a Rotary Club in Madras who is organising the installation of temporary and eventually permanent housing for fishermen who have been affected by the tsunami. Photographs of the area are shown below:

the livelihood rehabilitation has started at Sulerikatukuppam where in we
have supplied boats with Out Board Motors and Nets to them. In fact, 11
boats had arrived out of the 36 ordered thus far.

As far as the Permanent Shelters goes it is rather frustrating that
Government of Tamil Nadu has not yet allotted the land to us as they
have promised to do while we are all ready to commence work immediately
upon the land allotment. I am mailing herewith the photographs with
boats supplied.
